bert_and_ernieSo, about a month ago, Lucy & we were sitting around, shooting the breeze, as we are wont to do on a cold winter’s eve. Lent was coming up, Lucy commented, and we talked about the concept of giving something up for 40 days. Just then, a spark — giving it up. Giving ‘it’ up. An idea was born.

What brilliance! What originality! Oh, but wait. Not so much.

Back in November ’08, Pastor Ed Young told his Texas mega-church congregation that the married couples should have seven straight days of sex. Seven days of sweet, sweet, God-sanctioned, Bible-banging, love. Hallelujah! Use thy rod and thy staff to comfort her! Eat that burning bush! Play hide the loaves in your wife’s fishes! For Jesus!

Check it out here.

Nicely done, Pastor Ed…the masses sometimes need that push. To push it. Push it real good. So we’re doing it, too–not necessarily for religion’s sake, but for ourselves. The good pastor may not have intended his message to reach the Berts & Ernies of the world, but by Sodom, we’re all about it.

Eight days down! Amen!

bogie_bacall1I wanna pose a question to all the fella’s out there: do you ever get PMS sympathy?  And by that I mean you feel the symptoms of what our brave better halves have to endure the majority of their adult lives.

I looked up what the symptoms are & here’s what ‘Woman to woman.com’ posts:

PMS symptoms

  • mood swings
  • irritability
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • angry outbursts
  • confusion or fuzzy thinking
  • tearfulness
  • fatigue
  • insomnia
  • changes in libido
  • overeating
  • cravings, especially for salty or sweet foods
  • alcohol intolerance
  • acne
  • hives
  • abdominal and pelvic cramps
  • bloating
  • weight gain
  • headaches
  • menstrual migraines
  • breast swelling and pain
  • edema (visible swelling, particularly in the hands, feet and legs)
  • asthma
  • sinus problems
  • sore throat
  • worsening of chronic conditions like arthritis and ulcers
  • difficulty with coordination, being more prone to accidents
  • dizziness, decreased balance
  • heart pounding (palpitation)
  • nausea
  • fainting
  • urinary problems

Ok, so my sympathy pains are never as severe as this whole list (though I’ve never heard of a woman getting hives?!).  I looked up treatments for PMS symptoms which usually involve exercises, dietary change, stress reduction and sometimes medication, but here’s what I like to prescribe: chocolate, massages, more chocolate, and weed.  We’ll see how that goes…

I have have to go take a nap now as I’m feeling irritable, bloated, and fatigued (plus my breasts may or may not be swelling).

Please don’t look at me, kid… naked.

lucyanddesiI can’t recall which day it was, now that we are further along in this adventure, that Desi and I had the discussion which started with, “Why are we doing this again?”  Doing it because we HAVE to is far less inspiring than doing it because we WANT to.  And we often WANT to, just not every single day straight for 46 days.  So what is the real challenge?  What do we hope to gain from all of this?  Is there a light at the end of all this humping?

Thinking of ways to make it fun, using creative ways to be inspired, finding a positive spin on what can sometimes be an exhausting task at the end of a long day– when one of us has a cough, one of us is feeling too full, one of us is mad at the other, when the dishes are piling up or work has been too long– in the stresses of the everyday, maybe we can find the time and the patience to love each other.  And although every coitus during these 46 days won’t be the most inspired, maybe it’s searching for the  “one” that will make it all worth it. Or maybe just making it through together makes it worth it.  I guess we’ll see.

More to come (hee),

Lucy and Desi

han-and-leia2There are two powerful mood-breakers that we had to face last night…

A head cold.

A stubbed toe.

Trying to look seductive in my short shorts and tight t-shirt, I quickly hid a snot-soaked tissue under my pillow as Han suavely entered the bedroom. Just as he smiled and started to wink…THUD…and the wink turned to a wince as he let out a pained “F^UCK!!” Grabbing his foot and hopping wildly, I knew the trumpet case I had left out on the floor was about to get thrown in a rage of anger and hurt. And it was.

Fortunately, it was a minor stubbing and didn’t require medical help…at least, not from a real nurse. *wink.

lady-hawk-and-macho-glen2Going to work every day sucks. Going to work drudging through 10 inches of snow sucks even more. Sitting on the 86th street cross town bus, I couldn’t wait to get home, relax, and cook some dinner. But when I arrived, dinner had been made and there was a beer waiting in a frosty mug. My fiancee had surprised me with dinner. This is just one of the many reason why I love this lady and why day number 6 is just as exciting as day number 1.

My Fellow Americans,

Michelle and I are proud to represent our country on GIVING IT UP FOR LENT – the blog.  It’s important to us to get the word out that daily sex is a good thing, and we plan on using new media such as blogging to deliver said message.

While we are late to join the blogging game, Michelle and I promise you that we have been participating since day one of this experiment.  Actively.  Healthy.  Happily.  As long as this experiment continues, know that your president and his wife will be in the trenches alongside the other good people on this site, for we are all Americans and regardless of whether you are rich or poor, black or white, straight or gay, sex is the great equalizer.

In closing, I’d like to bring up a few brief points about my stimulus package:

  1. Stimulus
  2. Package

Yes we can!

Good day, good sex, and God Bless the United States of America.

Update: Day 5

lucyAfter much discussion, we decided that our “after midnight” indeed did NOT count and we threw in a late night session before bed on Day 3.  What that session consisted of, I really can’t say.  And not because it’s too personal or in the words of Christina Aguilera, to drrrrty.  It’s seriously a blur, due to tequila and beer.  I haven’t thrown back tequila like that since my cocktail waitressing days.  And I have to say, I am very impressed that I handled it with what Desi calls “gracia.”

I will say that Day 4’s festivities took place in a far more sober state, but due to our devouring of  Desi’s deliciously prepared meal last night, we were a little too full for the “beast with two backs” and rather opted for an alternative involving a Lush brand massage bar and some video streaming.  I handled that one with “gracia” as well.
